Art Print Pricing Formula: Cost-Plus That Covers You

A neat creative studio corner with priced prints on a wall and a calculator on the worktable, warm lamp light — money and making guide

Pricing prints is where most artists first learn that making art and selling art are different skills — and the good news is the maths is learnable. The cost-plus formula is the honest backbone: add your per-print material cost to your design and setup time divided across the run, then double it, and you have a retail price that covers everything and leaves a real margin. This calculator runs that formula with your numbers: the materials each print actually costs, the hours you spent designing and setting up the run, your hourly rate, and the size of the edition. You get the true unit cost, the suggested retail price, your profit per print and per full run. The verdict is blunt about the two traps — pricing from materials alone (which makes your time free forever) and pricing from hope (which ignores your costs) — and it points to the Selling Hub at selling.phyrenix.com for the marketplace, shipping and customer-service side of turning prints into income.

❓ Art Print Pricing: Cost-Plus Formula — FAQ

Why double the cost to find a retail price?

Doubling cost-plus is the classic wholesale-to-retail starting point: it covers materials, time, overheads and the prints that do not sell, and it leaves room for the platform or gallery commission. Artists who price from materials alone discover too late that their time was free.

How should marketplace commissions change my price?

A 30% marketplace fee means you only keep 70% of the listed price — so the fee must come out of your margin, not your costs. If your breakeven is $10, a 30% platform needs a listed price near $14.30 to keep the same profit; the calculator's margin is built for exactly that adjustment.

Do small editions justify higher prices?

Yes — a run of 10 signed prints can carry a higher per-print price than an open edition, because scarcity and the artist's hands-on time are part of what collectors buy. The formula still applies; the edition size simply changes how your design hours divide across the run.
